Useful Tips for Storing at Cook
Storage
Choosing:
ü Climate control is
useful for items such as paper documents that must be preserved in high grade
quality for many decades. For most items, non-climate control is safe and
economical. Think of your self-storage environment like your summer cottage
during winter and summer. Nearly everything can be left in a cottage without
damage.
ü Choose an indoor or
outdoor access door. Cook Storage has some sizes that have either an exterior or
interior access.
ü Choose the size that
meets your budget, but if you have a choice, choosing the next size larger is
actually less expensive in dollars-per-volume, and could make your moving and
access much easier.
Packing:
ü Try to put most
everything in boxes. Your organization will pay off.
ü Pack as if you
planned to put your possessions on a moving van. Use sturdy box containers to
store tools, dishes, home decorations, etc. Use protective wrap for delicate
items, and for larger items and irregular shaped goods such as furniture that
can’t fit in a box.
ü Pack clothes in
airtight bags. Use recommended pest repellents. The repellents often deter
rodents, as well. Never store clothes outside of a box or
bag.
ü NEVER pack food
items, even if it’s packaged for your pantry storage. Canned items might be
allowed, but ask the management at Cook Storage.
ü Make a detailed
inventory list of everything you store.
Arranging:
ü Use pallets or an
equivalent method to lift all your goods off the concrete floors. Concrete holds
some moisture. Ask the manager for any available pallets provided on the
site.
ü Put more valuable
items buried under larger, heavier, less valuable items.
ü Never store items
that have high monetary or sentimental valuable.
ü Store items that are
heat sensitive closer to the floor than the ceiling.
ü Put the items you
may need during the storage period closest to the door.
ü If you will need to
often use the items from storage, make aisle-ways between stored
goods.
ü Use your home
shelving furniture units to shelve goods during storage.
Storing:
ü Use a high grade
lock. Cook Storage sells locks recommended by self-storage industry
professionals.
ü If possible, check
your stored items every few months. A minor problem can be resolved easily if
caught early.
ü Ensure your
home-owner’s insurance policy covers all your stored
goods.
ü Most rent is due on
the first day of the month. We send invoices only to businesses or by your
special request, so mark your calendar to avoid late fee
penalties.
